Hello and welcome to SharPeinfo.com. This site was created out of frustration that there was no informative, centralized location that was easy to understand and learn all about the Shar Pei dog breed. It is my attempt to fill the void and create a free site with information and articles to help Shar Pei dog owners - new and old, learn all they need to know about one of the newest, and in my opinion, "best" breeds available. Thank you for visiting. I appreciate all your feedback, input and contributions to SharPeinfo.com. - Dwight Z.
Shar Pei History
Originating in China from the province of Guangdong and recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1991, the Shar Pei has the distinctive features of deep wrinkles and a blue-black tongue. The name translates to "sand skin," not because of the common color but because of texture. As puppies, Shar Pei have a lot of wrinkles, but as they mature, the wrinkles disappear as they "grow into their skin". Shar Pei History

Shar Pei Puppies
Are they right for you?
A Sharpei puppy is
playful, active, dominant, and brave.
They bond with their family, but are not unfriendly toward strangers.
The Chinese Shar-Pei has a frowning expression, but is surprisingly easy-going, calm, independent, and devoted. They make a delightful companion and good watchdogs.
Shar-Pei need firm, but gentle and extremely consistent training. They are stubborn and bold and need firm obedience training to establish your leadership. They may refuse commands from family members who have not established leadership over them.
Living Conditions
The Chinese Shar-Pei will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. It is moderately active indoors and will do okay without a yard. Because of their padded head, the Shar-Pei is very sensitive to heat. Shade and water must always be available. Provided they get enough exercise, they will be very peaceful indoors.
Problem Dogs?
One misconception is that the Shar-Pei have skin problems due to their wrinkles. Yes some Shar-Pei have skin problems, but it is not because the dog has wrinkles, but rather a hereditary condition.
