In a program begun in 1986, 24 mean dogs — mostly German shepherds, rottweilers and Belgian malinois, with a few boxers and pit bulls — roam the space between the inner and outer chain-link fences 24 hours a day, ferociously defending their territory.

Get too close to the fence and they will bare their teeth, bark and lunge. Set foot in their space and they will attack.

Selecting a good rescue group is similar to finding a good breeder. You want to make sure that the facilities are clean and the staff is friendly. The Shar-Pei should be fit and friendly and appear clean, healthy, and well taken care of.

Veterinary references and references from previous adopters should be readily available for prospective owners. Vaccination and spaying or neutering should be done before adoption takes place. A dog should never leave the facility before being treated for serious diseases such as respiratory or intestinal infection or heartworm. Relocating a dog creates stress and anxiety, which can be a big factor in making the illness worse.
