I was wondering if they’re were any organizations that assist in the cherry eye procedure for the shar pei? I have become recently unemployed and my 4 month old pup (Kona) has entropian and severe cherry eye in one of his eyes. Im not a careless pet owner and absolutely love my dog, Just not in the financial situation to afford an 800 dollar surgery. If you know of any organizations or have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Debi, the history of the Pei has shown (or handed down) that Pei helped their peasant masters in various tasks such as herding cattle, guarding the home and family, and have proven themselves to be qualified hunters of wild game, usually wild pigs, and, of course they were used for generations as fighting dogs, by the Chinese nobility, although the practice became rarer after the people’s Revolution when such activities were seen as the preserve of the decadent classes.

Thanks Lisa – I can see your point as well. However most “new” Shar Pei owners are bombarded with all the mass-produced pet food out there at the local pet supply store. In my experience I have found that with the bloodlines that I have owned maintaining a lower protein diet full of natural foods helps the Shar Pei maintain a healthy lifestyle. This is also supported with research from Dr. Vidt who states that Shar-Pei with FSF have increased levels of the cytokine Interleukin-6 (IL-6). IL-6 is involved with the fever response and and is an integral part of triggering the production of Acute Phase Reactant Proteins by the liver.

I completely disagree with the “low protein” diet. Unless a dog is in kidney failure, a low protein diet is not recommended. Furthermore, it is the QUALITY of the protein that is of importance. A high quality protein such as chicken breast is easier on the kidneys to digest that a low quality, low protein substance that are in so many of the crappy dog foods out there. I feed a grain-free diet and my Pei are thriving!

I take offense at Breed Specific Behavior #1 – sharking. SharPei are not nor ever have been fighting dogs. The term fighting dog came around because there was no Chinese translation for “GUARD DOG”. They are guard dogs, not fighting dogs.
