Entropion surgery is a permanent procedure in which excess eyelid tissue is removed from the eyelids. Shar-Pei typically undergo this surgery after they reach the age of six to eight months. At this age, pups are considered to be full grown and it also helps to ensure that their head has fully developed. Entropion surgery is considered to be a permanent repair in correcting the eyelid problem.

Be selective when choosing a specialist or veterinarian for this procedure. Make sure you choose a doctor that has knowledge and expertise in this area. Veterinarian ophthalmologists are sometimes recommended because the procedure involves various techniques including removing excess tissue from the eyelids, tightening the opening of the eye, and sometimes removing folds of skin around the eyes.

After the surgery, it is important that your pup not rub or scratch the eyes. A lampshade collar is often given to protect the stitches from being ripped open or scratched. Shar-Pei typically look worse after the surgical procedure due to swelling. Stitches are usually removed after one to two weeks.

Be aware that Shar-Pei’s eyes can be very sensitive to allergies and can easily swell shut due to allergens including dust and cigarette smoke.
