Shar-Pei Seborrhoea

Seborrhoea is a common disease amongst many Shar-Pei.  It refers to the death of old skin cells followed by rapid production of new skin cells.  Normally, skin cells die and are rapidly replaced by new skin cells.  However, with seborrhoea the rate in which skins cells reproduce is accelerated.  This rapid acceleration can result in two different types of seborrhoea: seborrhoea sicca and seborrhoea oleosa.

Seborrhoea sicca has symptoms such as dry, flaky skin where as seborrhoea oleosa results in greasy, foul-smelling skin.  These conditions result in skin damage and can become easily infected with bacteria and yeast.  Both types of seborrhoea can cause discomfort to Shar-Pei.

Causes

Seborrhoea is a skin disorder that is often accompanied by allergies, poor nutrition, mange, and deficient or excess hormones.  Most often, if the underlying problem is cured, seborrhoea will decrease and sometimes almost disappear.

Though some Shar-Pei develop seborrhoea, others are not as lucky.  Some dogs are born with seborrhoea as a primary disease.  In cases where puppies are born with seborrhoea, no underlying cause can be found.  Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease and infected Shar-Pei must be carefully cared for their entire lives to keep them comfortable.

Treatment

Shar-Pei born with seborrhoea as a primary disease can be treated with shampoos.  It is recommended that Shar-Pei be bathed at least two to three times per week with medicated shampoos to prevent skin infections and to control the symptoms.  Skin infections are treated with antibiotics but are very expensive and have adverse side affects including liver and eye problems.
