Swollen Hock Syndrome is also known as Familial Shar-Pei fever. It is a disorder that is associated with short periods of unexplained fever, usually 103 to 107 degrees and higher in some rare cases. This serious illness can be accompanied by the following symptoms:
- Swollen jaw or painful muzzle
- Abdominal pain
- Swelling of the hock joint
- Reluctance to move
- Diarrhea
- Shallow breathing
- Vomiting
Normally, the fevers usually start when the pup is younger than 18 months of age. In some cases, the first fever does not take place until they adults. With increase of age, fevers usually decrease in occurance. The average fever lasts between a day to two days and is usually not treated.
Swollen Hock Syndrome is thought to be caused from the inability to regulate the immune system. Shar-Pei suffering from this syndrome are at risk of dying from amyloidosis, a disorder usually related to Familial Shar-Pei Fever and Swollen Hock Syndrome.
It is important to keep a good eye on your dog and watch for the associated symptoms of this disorder. If any of the associated symptoms occur, please contact your veterinarian right away for treatment procedures.
