Choosing your new Shar Pei is fun and exciting! Choosing the right one for you, however, involves many factors that should be taken into consideration. Making sure your new companion is healthy, well cared for, and well-behaved are all important when making your final decision to adopt from a rescue.
Rescued Shar Pei are normally older than six months of age. Most are house trained and are past the stage of chewing everything in sight, although some have had unhealthy past lives. These are all benefits to choosing a dog from a rescue group. Some rescue dogs have been raised by loving families that have gone through some type of misfortune and had to give them up for adoption. In some cases, rescued dogs may have been neglected or abused and brought to the rescue to find a loving home. The goal of a Shar-Pei rescue is to find the perfect owner according to the group standards. This is done to ensure thaat no Pei is returned to a foster home again.
Adjusting to a new dog can be difficult while the dog adjusts to learning to trust again or begins to trust his owner for the first time. It is normal for your pup to have fear of new noises, separation anxiety, and temptation to run away. Normally after the first few months, a bond is developed in which your Shar-Pei will completely trust you and his new family.
Keep these hints in mind when choosing the right Shar-Pei for you:
- If your time is limited, it might be a good idea to choose an older Shar-Pei, already housebroken, trained, and well-behaved. You don’t want to come home to messes in the house after a long days work!
- If your budget is tight, research different rescue groups. Adoption fees vary from rescue to rescue. If you find that you cannot afford a Shar-Pei at one rescue, research more. There are plenty of rescued Shar-Pei looking for loving homes!
- If you are an inexperienced dog owner, be sure to talk with the rescue group to get more information. Ask lots of questions! You will find that most Shar-Pei rescue groups are willing to share all the information they can about the breed.
- If you have children or elderly people in your home, be sure to choose a well-behaved Shar-Pei. Choose one with a good temperament that you think will respond well with your family. It’s also a good idea to bring your family with you when choosing the right pup.
- If you do not have a fenced yard, be prepared to walk your new companion at least four to five times per day for exercise and bathroom needs.
