Caring for your Shar-Pei goes far beyond providing shelter, food, and water. Responsible pet ownership takes patience, time, love, and care. Before adopting a pet, you should ask yourself the following questions.
1. Are you ready to make a long-term commitment?
The average age of a dog is 10-15 years. Be sure that you are ready to make this type of commitment. Consider different factors such as moving, marriage, birth of a child, and new jobs before adopting. Animals are permanent additions to your family and it can be heartbreaking for both you and your pet to have the bond between the both of you broken. Think before acting on impulse. Are you really ready to make a 10-15 year commitment to your loving companion?
2. Are you able to spend quality time with your Shar-Pei?
It is a proven fact that dogs that are left alone can develop behavioral problems. Dogs thrive on several hours of exercise and attention every day. Make sure you are able to commit yourself to spending a large amount of your time praising, playing with, and attending to your Shar-Pei when considering adoption.
3. Are you a responsible pet owner?
Be aware of your finances and make sure you are able to afford the cost of owning, maintaining, and caring for your Shar-Pei. The cost of owning a pet is far more than just the adoption fee. Be sure to include emergency veterinary care, licensing and identification, supplies, toys, and food.
4. Are you sure a Shar Pei is right for you?
Shar-Pei are very loving dogs but they are not the right breed for everyone. They require a lot of maintenance and preventative care. Consider allergies, housing restrictions, and moving issues before adopting a new pet. It’s a good idea to ask the shelter staff which dog they recommend. They can usually match a certain dog based on your situation, such as small children or long work hours.
5. Are you able to properly train your Shar Pei?
Be sure you have the time and patience to properly train your dog. Whether you prefer to train on your own or attend dog training classes, training helps to ensure good behavior while you are away at work or running a quick errand. Studies show that people who properly train their dogs are more likely to keep them!
