Considering adopting a new puppy?  Consider saving a puppy’s life in the process.  Adoption is a great alternative to purchasing a dog from a pet store and is usually less expensive than purchasing from a breeder.

Steps

1. Consider adopting from your local animal shelter, Humane Society, or other rescue group.  You can even find purebred rescue groups if considering adopting a certain breed.  Check to see if they have visiting rooms in which you can interact with the puppies.  This helps make choosing one easier since a decision of which puppy is often made on instinct.
2. Choose which breed of dog you’d like to adopt.  If you are considering adopting a Shar-Pei, contact different animal shelters to see if they have any available for adoption.  If not, you may want to contact a purebred rescue group.
3. Consider your budget when choosing which puppy.  The larger the puppy grows, the more expensive they become when considering feeding and veterinary bills.
4. Remember that any dog can be trained, so try not to let behavior become a major factor in your decision. If you want one that is already trained, test which commands it already knows first.
5. The most important factor is to see if the dog likes you.  Interact with the dog and see how it reacts toward you.
6. The final step is the adoption process.  Be sure you are selective in your choosing.  Adopting a puppy is a lifelong commitment and it takes a responsible pet owner to provide the proper care.  Remember, by adopting a puppy, you are saving a dog’s life, saving money, and making space for another homeless dog to have the chance to find a loving home like your new companion!
