1. You’ll Save a Shar-Pei

Unfortunately, in the United States, millions of sheltered animals are euthanized each year.  The abundance of sheltered animals compared to those adopting is increasing.  Too many Americans give up their pets and too few adopt from a shelter.  Because there is not enough housing in the shelters, many adoptable animals are euthanized after not being adopted after a certain amount of time.  By adopting an animal, you are saving them from being euthanized as well as freeing up space for a new homeless pet to wait for a loving owner.

2. Ensure a Healthy Pet

Most animal shelters examine and give vaccinations to homeless animals when they arrive.  Many rescue groups also require the animal to be spayed or neutered before adoption.  All animals receive examinations and medical care upon arrival to ensure a healthy life with their future owner.
Many people think that animals in shelters have all been abused or that they have something wrong with them.   This is a misconception since most animals brought to shelters are brought there due to issues involving people such as lack of time, divorce, moving, or financial reasons.

3. Keeps Cost Down

As you may already know, purchasing a Shar-Pei from a breeder can be very expensive!  Pet stores are also very costly.  Adopting an animal from a shelter keeps costs to a minimum and ensures you get a healthy pet that is up to date on all vaccinations and in most cases spayed or neutered.

4. Companionship

After a long days work, you are tired an exhausted.  Walking through the door to an excited Shar-Pei is a sure way to put a smile on anybodies face!  Animals provide humans with unconditional love, but have also been proven to a be a great source for psychological, emotional, and physical healing.  Caring for an animal reduces loneliness in all age groups.

Pets are also a great way to get in shape!  By walking your dog on a daily basis, you are benefiting both your health and theirs!  Pets are proven to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.  Not only are pets great companions, they are also a good source of all-around medicine!

5. Support the Needy, Not the Greedy

Puppy mills are dog-breeding facilities that are compared to that of a factory and are concerned primarily with making a profit.  They live in very poor housing conditions and receive little or no medical care.  Puppies are kept in cages to be continuously bred over many years.  After they are no longer able to produce profits, the breeding dogs are usually abandoned, exterminated, or auctioned.
Many puppy mill sales are sold to pet store consumers, in classified newspaper ads, and over the internet.  They are usually advertised as being bred from experienced top-of-the-line breeders who cover their breeding process with convincing sales tactics.  Prospective buyers usually never see the parents of the pup or the facility quality in which they live.  Many people are not aware of the existence of puppy mills, their marketing techniques, and their greedy tactics behind selling puppies online or in pet stores.

Adopting a pet ensures that you are not supporting this cruel selfish industry.  Instead of purchasing an animal from a pet store, look into your local animal shelter first.  You are more likely to find a healthy animal that has been well socialized with other dogs and people, waiting to be adopted into a special loving home!
