Selecting a good rescue group is similar to finding a good breeder. You want to make sure that the facilities are clean and the staff is friendly. The Shar-Pei should be fit and friendly and appear clean, healthy, and well taken care of.
Veterinary references and references from previous adopters should be readily available for prospective owners. Vaccination and spaying or neutering should be done before adoption takes place. A dog should never leave the facility before being treated for serious diseases such as respiratory or intestinal infection or heartworm. Relocating a dog creates stress and anxiety, which can be a big factor in making the illness worse. However, Shar-Pei with minor problems such as an ear infection or arthritis usually are allowed to be adopted but treatments or medication is always sent with the new owners.
A rescue group should try to pair applicants with an appropriate dog. Staff should be able to suggest particular dogs that likes kids, play rough, are already trained, or even afraid of certain genders. In order to make a good match, the staff may ask questions about the type of home you can provide or lifestyle of the owner. Some questions they may ask are:
- Do you have a fenced yard? If not, do you plan to walk the dog a mile or more every day?
- Do you plan to visit the veterinarian at least once a year?
- Do you have enough time to care for a Shar-Pei?
- Do you have kids? How old?
- Will the dog live indoors or outside?
- Why do you want a Shar-Pei?
- Do you have other pets?
Most rescue groups have applications that must be filled out before adopting. Some groups visit the applicant’s home and may check references before allowing adoption. The process may be long and require lots of time and paperwork, but it’s important to remember that the goal of the rescue group is to find a good, loving, life-long home for their pups.
Having small children may be a determining factor by rescue groups when they consider you for adoption of their Shar-Pei. Some rescues will not adopt adult dogs to families with smaller children as a precaution. Adult dogs that are not familiar with being around children may have difficulty adjusting to the noise and activity of small children.
Potential adopters should be ready to ask questions regarding adoption requirements, annual vaccinations, heartworm preventative, yearly checkups, crate usage, training, unannounced home inspections, maintaining ownership, or any other questions that the owner may have regarding their future companion.
