It is defined as a protrusion of the third eyelid. The cause of this problem is the detachment of the gland for the third eyelid and can be noticed by a round red Cherry eye – protrusion of the third eyelid – is another fairly common problem in the breed. The gland for the third eyelid becomes unattached and can be seen a round red drop in the inner corner of the eye.

Though this problem does not cause any pain to your Shar-Pei, it can become a serious problem if untreated. It is important to contact your veterinarian right away once you notice this problem. If untreated, the red area can become particularly large and obscure the entire eye.

Cherry eye is a treatable condition and treatment consists of surgery to place the gland back into place and attach It with stitches. It is a common procedure that is usually very successful. In rare cases, the gland can pop back out of place in which the gland is generally removed from the eye. If this happens, eye drops must be placed in the eyes of your Shar-Pei for the rest of its life to prevent dry eye. If one gland becomes loose, the other eye will also be affected. It is usually recommended that if one gland becomes loose, you should try to wait an extra couple of weeks to see if the other gland becomes a problem as well. This is to help prevent your pup from having to undergo anesthesia twice in such a short period of time. At this time, there is no preventative surgery that can be done. The gland must come out before it can be repaired.

Shar-Pei typically undergo this surgery after they reach the age of six to eight months. At this age, pups are considered to be full grown and it also helps to ensure that their head has fully developed. Entropion surgery is considered to be a permanent repair in correcting the eyelid problem.

Be selective when choosing a specialist or veterinarian for this procedure. Make sure you choose a doctor that has knowledge and expertise in this area. Veterinarian ophthalmologists are sometimes recommended because the procedure involves various techniques including removing excess tissue from the eyelids, tightening the opening of the eye, and sometimes removing folds of skin around the eyes.

After the surgery, it is important that your pup not rub or scratch the eyes. A lampshade collar is often given to protect the stitches from being ripped open or scratched. Shar-Pei typically look worse after the surgical procedure due to swelling. Stitches are usually removed after one to two weeks.

Be aware that Shar-Pei’s eyes can be very sensitive to allergies and can easily swell shut due to allergens including dust and cigarette smoke. These allergies can cause the appearance of entropion but a surgical procedure will not make the problem go away. Removing the allergen from the environment will correct this problem and

Usually, the first stages and symptoms of entropion appear in puppies around one to two weeks of age, around the same time in which they normally open their eyes. The most common sign to look for in young puppies, when detecting entropion, is constant squinting and closing of the eyes. Another sign to watch for is eye mucous or discharge as well as a loss of appetite and weight loss.

Eye tacking is a procedure in which nylon stitches are placed in the eyelids to roll them away from the eyeball, opening the eye and preventing irritation. The stitches are left in place for up to four weeks, but can be replaced as needed until the repair is permanent. If the stitches loosen or cause problems, they can easily be removed. This procedure is sometimes done without anesthetic and often time takes place in very young puppies, two to four weeks of age. Gas anesthetic is sometimes used in place of normal anesthesia.

The main purpose for eye tacking is to prevent serious eye damage until the pup is old enough to undergo entropion surgery, a permanent repair for the eye condition. After reaching the age of six months, the puppy can undergo the permanent procedure of entropion surgery. The early procedure of eye tacking can prevent the need for entropion surgery later on in life.

This common eye problem can be present soon after the birth of your pup or acquired later in life and most commonly affects the lower part of the eyelids.

Usually inherited, the Shar-Pei is one of fourteen breeds that can develop this condition.  Infection, corneal ulcers, and watery eyes are a few problems that can develop from this condition.  Shar-Pei that have developed entropion are encouraged not to be bred as this condition is thought to be passed on through genetics.

Entropion can be accompanied by other eye problems such as abnormal eyelashes, scarring, ulcers, and ectropion, which is just the opposite of entropion.  Ectropion is the inward rolling of the eyelid which causes the hair on the lid to constantly rub against the cornea creating significant damage to the cornea itself.  Refer to the list of symptoms below when caring for your cuddly companion:

  • Tearing
  • Redness and pain around the eye
  • Increased sensitivity to light and wind
  • Sagging skin around the eye
  • Rubbing of the eyes
  • Thick discharge coming from the eyes
  • Squinting or inability to see the eye well
  • Rolling of the eyelid
  • Wetness on the hairs adjacent to the eyelids

Diagnosis

Diagnosing entropion is done through a careful eye examination.  The position of the eye is checked and an anesthetic may be prescribed.  The edges of the eyelids are also carefully examined for ingrown eyelashes or eyelashes that may be out of place, causing irritation.  To detect corneal ulcers, a special dye is used which turns a bright green color if there is corneal damage.  Other components of the eye are also examine for abnormalities to ensure there are no underlying causes accompanying the entropion.

Treatment

Entropion can be cured by a simple surgical procedure.  It is important to make sure your veterinarian has experience in these procedures to ensure the surgery is done correctly.  Overcorrecting the surgical procedure can have serious repercussions.  Based on the age of your Shar-Pei and the seriousness of the condition, different surgical techniques may be used.
Entropion surgery consists of removing a small section of the eyelid in order to lift the eyelashes to their proper position.  This allows them to no longer be in contact with the cornea or cause irritation.

For Shar-Pei puppies, a procedure known as “Eye Tacking” is performed.  Sutures are placed in the eyelid to reposition the lid and separate the eyelashes away from the eyeball itself.  The sutures are left in place for approximately 10-12 days or until the infection has passed.  It is common for Shar-Pei puppies to need eye “tacks” more than once as they grow into their wrinkles.  The eye tacks are made to train the eyelids to lie properly at a young age to prevent a later surgical procedure.
