Hypothyroidism is associated with the thyroid glands and the hormones that are secreted. The hormones that are secreted from the thyroid glands control the basic metabolic rate of the Shar-Pei’s entire body.

Hormone levels that are inadequate cause the body function at a lower metabolic rate. Shar-Pei with lower metabolic rates may become sluggish and easily gain weight. Their body temperature also fluctuates easily, causing them to become easily chilled. The most noticeable change in reduced hormone levels and hypothyroidism include the loss of hair from the flanks and back and increased pigmentation of the skin. Hypothyroidism may cause scaling and seborrhea which is an abnormality in the production of skin cells. Another common symptom associated with hypothyroidism is bacterial infection of the skin which causes itchy and sometimes painful irritation. Be aware of thick, yellow, greasy substance in the ears which may be present in Shar-Pei with hypothyroidism. Pups with this substance in their ears are prone to ear infections. Read more
