Selecting a good rescue group is similar to finding a good breeder. You want to make sure that the facilities are clean and the staff is friendly. The Shar-Pei should be fit and friendly and appear clean, healthy, and well taken care of.

Veterinary references and references from previous adopters should be readily available for prospective owners. Vaccination and spaying or neutering should be done before adoption takes place. A dog should never leave the facility before being treated for serious diseases such as respiratory or intestinal infection or heartworm. Relocating a dog creates stress and anxiety, which can be a big factor in making the illness worse. However, Shar-Pei with minor problems such as an ear infection or arthritis usually are allowed to be adopted but treatments or medication is always sent with the new owners. Read more
