As you might already know, the Shar-Pei breed has very small ears.  This results in very narrow ear canals which make it difficult for cleaning and treatments.

The main problem associated with cleaning Shar-Pei ears is the lack of control that the owner has over the dog.  Proper training as a puppy is necessary for your Shar-Pei to tolerate ear cleanings and treatments during adulthood.  Positive reinforcement methods are key when training your puppy to adapt to ear cleanings.

Hypothyroidism is associated with the thyroid glands and the hormones that are secreted. The hormones that are secreted from the thyroid glands control the basic metabolic rate of the Shar-Pei’s entire body.

Hormone levels that are inadequate cause the body function at a lower metabolic rate. Shar-Pei with lower metabolic rates may become sluggish and easily gain weight. Their body temperature also fluctuates easily, causing them to become easily chilled. The most noticeable change in reduced hormone levels and hypothyroidism include the loss of hair from the flanks and back and increased pigmentation of the skin. Hypothyroidism may cause scaling and seborrhea which is an abnormality in the production of skin cells. Another common symptom associated with hypothyroidism is bacterial infection of the skin which causes itchy and sometimes painful irritation. When caring of the health of your Shar-Pei, beware of the common eye condition, entropion.  Entropion is a treatable condition known for the inward rolling edges of the eyelids.  This causes irritation when rubbing against the cornea, a sensitive part of the eye.
